Just one week remains for Bartholomew County residents to officially file their candidacies for the May 5 primary election.
The latest filings in Indiana include former Vice-President Joe Biden, who submitted his paperwork to run as a Democrat for U.S. President Tuesday.
On Monday, Democrat Jeannine Lee Lake submitted documents to become her party’s nominee for Sixth District U.S. Representative. Lake, who publishes a newspaper in Muncie, is hoping to win a second chance to challenge incumbent Republican Greg Pence.
In the 2018 general election, Pence received 64% of the vote while Lake garnered 33% throughout the district. Here in Bartholomew County, Pence won 61% while Lake got 36% support.
In the May 5 primary, incumbent Republican District 57 State Representative Sean Eberhart will face competition. Edward K. Comstock II filed his candidacy to challenge Eberhart on Jan. 24. District 57 includes a sizable portion of eastern and northern Bartholomew County, all of Shelby County, and a small section of Hancock County.
There will also be at least three Republican attorneys competing against each other with the hope of succeeding retiring Bartholomew Superior Court II Judge Kathleen “Kitty” Tighe Coriden.
Scott Andrews became the third GOP attorney on the May ballot when he officially filed on Wednesday. Two primary opponents, Jon Rohde and Dom Glover, filed earlier this month.
In municipal races outside of Columbus, Democrat Nellie Meek filed Jan. 23 to maintain her Ward 2 seat on the Hope Town Council. Earlier in the month, Republican John Wolstad filed to challenge Meek if he wins the May primary.
Hartsville Clerk-Treasurer Tresa K. Meier has made it official that she’s running for re-election. Meier was appointed by her fellow Republicans to fulfill the remaining term of Nancy Berkenstock, who resigned from the office.
All Hoosiers who wish to file a declaration of candidacy for a major party primary nomination must submit their completed paperwork by noon on Friday, Feb. 7. Any candidate who has already filed, but wants to back out, must withdraw their candidacy by noon on Monday, Feb. 10, to avoid having their names on the primary ballot.
Those running for local offices should file in the Voter Registration Office in the Bartholomew County Courthouse. Those seeking state and federal offices must submit their completed paperwork with the Indiana Secretary of State’s office in Indianapolis.
