When Sam Flint was on vacation in Michigan with his family last summer, he decided to make a visit to Cornerstone University.

When he got there, Flint talked to the baseball coach, who then asked him if he wanted to go through a tryout. Flint didn’t have his glove or bat with him, but borrowed some equipment to use.

Although the tryout didn’t go as well as he had hoped, Flint was offered a spot on the team. The Columbus Christian senior signed a letter-of-intent on Friday to attend the NAIA school in Grand Rapids.

“I looked at a lot of different schools, and when I went to Cornerstone, the coaches were really nice, and I just got a really good feel for it,” Flint said. “Their field and facilities are really nice, and I just decided that’s where I wanted to go.”

Flint, who had played in a tournament at Cornerstone with his Indiana Eagles travel team, started playing baseball at age 5 when the family lived in California. With his father Reeves, a Columbus native, being in the military, the family moved to Washington State, then Columbus for a year, then New Orleans for a year, then back to Columbus for good.

Sam Flint played at Columbus Christian as a freshman and Trinity Lutheran as a sophomore before coming back to Columbus Christian last year. The shortstop and second baseman, who plans to major in sports management at Cornerstone, said he always has hoped to play baseball at the collegiate level.

“It’s always been a big goal of mine to play college, and I’ve worked toward that,” Flint said. “That was something I really wanted to do. I’[m pretty happy. It’s a big dream come true for me.”
