Club Olympia’s Brady Beyer swam in his last meet as a 14 year old at the 2020 Boilermaker Aquatics Gold Fever Invitational in West Lafayette and won the Men’s Open 100-yard breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and 200 freestyle.
Beyer, a freshman at Columbus East, currently is ranked fourth in the nation in the 13-14 200 breaststroke, 22nd in the 400 individual medley and 27th in the 100 breaststroke. He also is 11th in the nation and first in Indiana in the IMX, a combined score of power points from the 500 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 200 IM and 400 IM.
Club Olympia takes ninth
Club Olympia, with just 22 swimmers, finished ninth overall, the second team from Indiana behind the host team, Carmel Swim Club, at the 2020 CSC Winter Invitational at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium.
Beyer led the way, finishing with 118 points to place second in high point among the 13-14-year-old boys. He won the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke and finished second in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 500 free; third in the 200 freestyle and eighth in the 100 butterfly.
Misha Machavariani scored 97.5 points in the 11-12 boys age group, placing third in the 100 breaststroke and 500 freestyle, sixth in the 50 butterfly and 100 butterfly, seventh in the 50 breaststroke and 200 IM, eighth in the 200 freestyle and 12th in the 50 backstroke.
Nalanie Cortez had the most points for the girls, finishing with 82 by placing third in the 200 butterfly, fifth in the 100 freestyle, sixth in the 200 freestyle, seventh in the 500 freestyle, eighth in the 400 IM, 10th in the 50 freestyle, 11th in the 100 Butterfly and 14th in the 200 IM.
Connelly Furnish scored 64 points in the 10-and-under girls competition, placing fifth in the 50 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke and 200 IM, sixth in the 200 freestyle, 10th in the 100 freestyle and 15th in the 50 freestyle. Furnish also teamed with Grier Lane, Sanaa Kulkarni and Advika Badve to finish seventh in the 10U Girls 200 freestyle relay and with Badve, Kulkarni and Lovely Panda to also place seventh in the 200 medley relay.
Rachel Sabotin finished with 49 points in the Girls Open, placing second in the 200 butterfly, fourth in the 200 IM, sixth in the 400 IM and 13th in the 100 butterfly.
Evan Patterson scored 35 points in the Boys Open events by placing sixth in the 100 freestyle, ninth in the 100 Butterfly, 10th in the 100 breaststroke and 11th in the 50 freestyle.
Joshua Pendleton, competing on one day, finished with 13 points in the 10U boys division by placing 11th in the 200 IM, 12th in the 50 backstroke and 15th in the 100 freestyle.
Todd Hundley scored 10 points in the 11-12 boys age group by placing 12th in the 50 freestyle, 13th in the 500 freestyle and 16th in the 100 backstroke.
Ashley Freel finished with nine points in the Girls 13-14 division by placing 11th in the 200 butterfly, 15th in the 200 freestyle and 16th in the 400 IM.
Advika Badve scored seven points in the Girls 10U competition by placing 10th in the 50 backstroke.
HOCKEY
Flames teams fare well
The Columbus Mites had two teams compete this weekend against Northern Kentucky.
Columbus 1 beat Northern Kentcuky’s "AA" team 6-5 and 9-1 at Cresent Springs, Kentucky. Bentley Hampton, Brooks Larsh, Carter Harris, Jack Sargent, Keaton Grube, Logan Barringer, Maddox Coy and Robby Orgass all had goals or assists for Columbus 1. Dalton Larsh played goalie in his debut versus "AA" teams.
Columbus 2 defeated Northern Kentucky’s "B" team 6-2 and 6-3. Blake Schneider, Chance Mathis, Daniel Wallace, Duncan Saner, Hiromu Udo, Lukas Jozsa, Luke Getchell and Thomas Degner all recorded goals or assists for Columbus 2. Hallie Mudd played goalie in her debut versus "B" teams.
Squirt Flames Orange won 5-0 and tied 4-4 against Evansville A2. Drew Moenssen scored six goals; Ryan McGhehey added two goals; Ayden Richardson had one goal and Jackson Schneider, Kai Bergmann, Noah Doig, and Cooper Ross all notched one assist. Hudson Beckom was in net with a save percentage of 85.7.
PeeWee Flames A swept the Miami Junior Redhawks 4-2, 8-1, 5-3 and 4-3 in games played in Columbus and Oxford, Ohio. Individual goals were not recorded for two of the four games. In the other two games, Sawyer Patterson netted two goals and two assists, Will Jamerson added two goals and one assist, Eduardo Aranda-Michel scored two goals, Wyatt Warner had one goal and three assists, Westin Davis notched one goal and two assists, Bryce McDonald and Drew Weed each added one goal and one assist, Hayden Johnson and Vaughn Moenssen each scored one goal and Lance Kitterman and Leif Nelson each had one assist. Jackson Wheatley was in net.
Bantam Flames lost to the Junior Fuel 4-0 and 5-1. Dane Weinzapfel scored one goal, and Cameron Riley had one assist. Ben Blanz was in net.
The Peewee B team beat Indy Fuel-Kleinke 4-1. River Degner scored goals, Drew Moenssen and Vaughn Moenssen each added one goal and Cole Finney had one assist. Lane Barringer had a save percentage of 96.3.
BROOMBALL
Vagabonds edge Monsters
Vagabonds blanked Monsters of Rock 1-0 to move within two points of the Monsters, who are in first place in the Columbus Broomball League heading into the final week of the regular season.
Carlos Pernia scored the lone goal for Vagabonds (8-2), who now have 16 points. Monsters (9-2) has 18.
Toyota Tsunamis (6-4-1, 13 points) shut out Jennings County BC (1-10, two points) 7-0. Jimmy Robertson, Dalton McNealy and Todd Houchin all scored two goals for Jennings, and Greg McNealy added one.
Jennings County BC also fell to CCA 6-0. Max Warr scored three goals, Scott Herron added two and Tim Walton had one for CCA (6-6, 12 points).
Our Name Is Earl beat Hansons 4-1. Ellie Lutz, Nick Lewis, Tom Kareus and Emily Anderson scored for Earl (4-5-3, 10 points). Matt Psota had the goal for Hansons (2-8-1, five points).
BASKETBALL
Panthers fall to Cubs
The Jennings County eighth-grade Blue team lost to Madison 34-17 on Tuesday. Blaine Ison led the Panthers (9-4) with 14 points, while Dylan Harrison added 10.
The Jennings seventh-grade Blue squad fell to Madison 56-40. Landon Pike and Brock Maschino each scored six points for the Panthers (3-10).
