Filing deadline for candidates almost here

Noon Friday is the deadline for those who wish to file for an office on the May 5 primary ballot.

Former Massachusetts governor Bill Weld has filed in Indiana to run for the GOP nomination for president. He will run against incumbent President Donald Trump in the primary, as Second Lady Karen Pence filed Trump’s paperwork in Indiana on Wednesday.

As of noon Thursday, four Democratic presidential hopefuls have filed their candidacies in Indiana: Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Amy Klobuchar and Tom Steyer.

Rep. Ryan Lauer, R-Columbus, will have a primary challenger. Ian R. Godrey filed this week to run as a Republican for the District 59 seat that Lauer won two years ago.

Two Democrats — Cynthia Wirth and Dale Nowlin — earlier announced they are seeking the same seat in the Indiana General Assembly. Lauer defeated Nowlin 57% to 41% to succeed Milo Smith in the 2018 elections.

District 69 State Rep. Jim Lucas, R-Seymour, does not have an opponent so far in the primary, but Democrat Jeffrey W. Prewitt is running as a Democrat with the hope of challenging Lucas in November.

There are now officially four Republicans seeking the Bartholomew Superior Court 2 judge seat being vacated by the retiring Kathleen “Kitty” Tighe Coriden.

Joseph “Joe” W. Meek, who has served as Superior Court 2 magistrate since 2003, originally announced his intentions to run last spring. Mee has submitted his paperwork to the Indiana Secretary of State’s office in Indianapolis. The other three GOP attorneys who filed earlier in hopes of succeeding Coriden are Scott C. Andrews, Dom Glover and Jonathan L. Rohde.

In Hope, two incumbent town council members have recently filed to run for another term. They are Ward One councilman Edward Johnson and Ohmer J. Miller, who represents Ward 3.
