Play to highlight Underground Railroad
The Jennings County Historical Society will be hosting a Charlotte Battin Productions one-woman play on Eleutherian College: A Road To Freedom. on Feb. 20 at 6 p.m.
This 45-minute play is for any age group interested in learning about the Underground Railroad in this part of the country. The story is about the Underground Railroad in the East Indiana Network, which included Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.
Eleutherian College was built by a group of families in Lancaster, Indiana, who came together and formed an anti-slavery society in 1839. It was the first college in Indiana to admit students without regard to race or gender.
Battin portrays Asenath Hoyt, an Indiana Underground Railroad conductor, during this theater performance.
The play is free to the public and is part of the historical society’s 2020 speaker series.
Coming in March is Dr. Curt Fields, living historian and re-enactor bringing Ulysses S. Grant to life with the Man Behind the Uniform.
Dr. Fields will be at the museum on March 26 at 6 p.m.
Both of the program align with the rich heritage of Jennings County.
The society’s first festival is coming up April 25 and 26 with Sassafras Tea Festival and Civil War Living History.

Legal Aid to have free clinic at library
Legal Aid will have a free clinic from 3 to 5 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Jennings County Public Library, 2375 N. State Highway 3.
The clinic and the Pro Bono Program utilizes local volunteer attorneys, offering free legal consultations to low-income individuals. Individuals who attend can expect to receive a 10-minute consultation to answer general questions, offer legal information, or to receive other assistance, on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is no need to register in advance.
