A local man was arrested Sunday afternoon for operating a vehicle while intoxicated after he was accused of crashing his truck into a fence at Garland Brook Cemetery.

At approximately 5:45 p.m., CPD officers responded to the area of Sixth Street and Gladstone Avenue in regards to a single vehicle accident with injury, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

According to a witness, the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, who was later identified as Michael D. Bewley, 58, of Columbus, was traveling south on Gladstone Avenue and later crossed into the adjacent lane before leaving the roadway and crashing into the cemetery fence, Harris said.

Bewley was extracted from the vehicle by the Columbus Fire Department and transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Officers later obtained a blood sample from Bewley and he was placed under arrest upon his discharge from the hospital, Harris said.

Bewley was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail staff on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, jail officials said.
