Graduating college is a significant achievement in any person’s life, but for me it was an even bigger milestone.
I am a first generation college graduate.
In May of 2019, I ran out into the real world with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education.
I was so excited to begin my teaching career. I couldn’t wait to get hired and to begin setting up my classroom for my future students. I could finally leave my college waitressing days far behind me: the 11-hour double shifts, the aching feet, the exhaustion.
Fast forward nine months and what does my life look like? I am a kindergarten teacher in Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation and I am also still a waitress.
In my first year of teaching I had hoped to give my undivided attention to my students.
I love that I get to come to work every day and make a difference in the lives of the 25 children in my class. My goal is to not only foster the love for learning in my students, but to nurture kind and caring human beings. The bond that I have formed with each one of my students is a relationship that they will carry with them for years to come, as will I. Seeing small children grow socially, emotionally, and academically is incredibly rewarding.
Voting YES for BCSC and me would change my life in the near future.
But don’t only vote yes for me, a stranger.
Vote yes for your own children and grandchildren who won’t have to face an inexperienced first-year teacher year after year.
Vote yes for children riding a bus to school, who will have safer transportation.
Vote yes for the neighbor’s child, who dreams to one day earn an advanced degree and bring back his knowledge and skills to this community.
Vote yes for the support staff who barely make above minimum wage.
Vote yes for the teachers that barely bring home a paycheck because they carry insurance for their family of four.
Vote yes for the community of Columbus.
Strong schools are the heart of a strong community. These children are our future and they deserve the best teachers, the best mental health resources, the safest school buses, and the brightest future.
Will you vote YES to invest in our children and community?
