Patberg awaits tourney destination

It’s now a waiting game for Indiana University guard Ali Patberg as to where her team will be seeded and placed for the upcoming NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship.

The NCAA women’s basketball selection show is at 7 p.m. Monday and will be televised on ESPN.

The Hoosiers, ranked No. 20 again this week in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll, are projected to be in the third-through-sixth seeded range. Should Indiana have one of the top four seeds in its bracket, they would host the first two rounds.

On the court, Patberg, a redshirt junior from Columbus North, scored her 1,000th career college point in a 66-51 loss to Maryland in the semifinals of the Big Ten Conference Tournament on Saturday. She is 11 points shy of 1,000 for her career with Indiana.

For her efforts, Patberg was named to the All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the championship game.

The Hoosiers head into the tournament at 24-8. The 24 wins set a school record for most wins in a season.

Guy earns honor

Marian forward Imani Guy was named to the All-Crossroads League Second Team, while also being named the conference’s 2019-20 Newcomer of the Year.

Guy, a junior from North, along with Elle Williams, a senior from North, will play in the NAIA D-II Women’s Basketball tournament opening-round game against Voorhees (South Carolina) at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Knights head into the tournament 30-3.

Huffman falls in tourney

Cedarville guard Ashlyn Huffman, a junior from North, fell 83-73 to Malone in the quarterfinals of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference on March 3.

The Yellow Jackets will participate in the NCCAA Midwest Regional where they’ll face Roberts Wesleyan at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Yellow Jackets are 20-8.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Chitty makes D-II tourney

Bellarmine guard Parker Chitty earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Division-II tournament announced on Sunday. The appearance will mark Bellarmine’s 12th straight in the tourney, which is the longest streak in Division II.

The Knights will take on Michigan Tech in the first round at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Indianapolis.

Chitty, a senior from Columbus East, scored a career-high and game-high 27 points to go along with one rebound, three assists and three steals in a 76-73 loss to University of Southern Indiana in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

The Knights head into the tournament 20-8.

Gross named All-CCAC

Olivet Nazarene center Alex Gross was named to the First-Team All-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference that was announced by the conference on March 2.

Gross, a sophomore from Hauser, led the NAIA in blocked shots this season and led the CCAC in double-doubles. He finished the regular season averaging 15.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 3.6 blocks per game.

The Tigers, who are seeded first, will travel to Sioux City, South Dakota, for the opening round of the tournament against Lincoln College at 1 p.m. Thursday.

The Tigers head into the tournament 30-3.

Williams earns honor

Hanover forward Kevin Williams, a senior from East, was named Second Team All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference that was announced by the conference on Wednesday. This is his second all-conference honor after being named honorable mention last year.

The Panthers finished the season 17-9.

King’s regular season ends

Army forward Alex King, a junior from North, finished with six points, four rebounds and an assist in a 73-68 season-ending loss to Lafayette in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Tournament on Thursday.

The Black Knights finished the regular season 15-15.

WRESTLING

Rooks qualifies for NCAA

Indiana University’s Graham Rooks, a redshirt freshman from East, finished 10th at 149 pounds at the Big Ten Conference Championships over the weekend.

Because of the weight class being extremely deep at 149 in the conference, it had 10 allocated spots for the NCAA Championships.

Rooks will compete in the NCAA Championships March 19-21 in Minneapolis.

BASEBALL

Wichman hits first homer

Butler shortstop Jonah Wichman, a freshman from East, smacked his first career college home run in the bottom of the second inning in a 22-4 win over Saint Francis on March 3. He added a double, four RBIs and scored three runs in the contest.

The Bulldogs are 7-6.

Greenwell gets winning RBI

Wright State pitcher and right fielder Julian Greenwell was hit by a pitch that led to the game-winning RBI in the 14th inning in an 8-6 win over Miami (OH) on March 3. He also had the go-ahead single in the 10th inning before Miami came back in the bottom half of the inning to tie it.

Greenwell, a freshman from East, went 2 for 4 with a double, walk and a run scored in a 5-4 victory over No. 11 Tennessee in the first game of a three-game series on Friday.

On the mound, Greenwell pitched two innings of relief, allowing two runs on two hits, one walk and three strikeouts in a 3-1 loss to Tennessee in the second game of a three-game series on Saturday, then went 0 for 3 with a walk and a run scored in a 6-3 win in the final game of the three-game series on Sunday.

The Raiders are 5-9.

Trinkle collects hits

Indiana University second baseman Cooper Trinkle went 1 for 4 with a two-run single in the first inning, a walk and a run scored in a 17-2 rout over Purdue on Wednesday.

Trinkle, a junior from North, went 3 for 4 with an RBI-double and scored two runs in a 9-2 victory over San Diego in the first game of a three-game series on Saturday, then went 2 for 4 in the second game that resulted in a 4-2 loss, then went 1 for 5 with a run scored in a 13-5 loss in the final game of the series.

The Hoosiers are 8-5.

Finke stays solid

Southeastern Louisiana utility player Tyler Finke went 1 for 4 with a walk in a 6-3 loss to LSU on March 3.

Finke, a sophomore from North, went 1 for 3 with a walk in a 2-1 loss to Central Arkansas in the second game of a three-game series on Saturday, and then went 2 for 5 with a double and a run scored in a 7-3 win in the final game of the three-game series on Sunday.

The Lions are 6-9.

Meyer sees action

University of Evansville pitcher Jakob Meyer, a freshman from North, surrendered two runs on two hits in an inning pitched during a 4-3 loss to Charlestown on Sunday.

The Aces are 4-11.

Hasson pitches in relief

Northern Illinois pitcher Drew Hasson, a sophomore from East, gave up one run on one hit in 1 1/3 innings in a 9-6 loss to Southern Illinois in the final game of a three-game series on Sunday.

The Huskies are 7-8.

SOFTBALL

Babb hits home run

Butler catcher Elyse Babb went 2 for 4 with a two-run home run in an 9-5 loss to Indiana State on Saturday.

Babb, a redshirt junior from East, went 1 for 2 with an RBI-single in a 7-1 victory over Western Carolina on Friday. She also added an RBI and a walk in a 9-3 victory over Youngstown State on Sunday.

The Bulldogs are 14-7.

Sims still strong

Indiana State second baseman Leslie Sims went 3 for 4 with a double, a walk and three runs scored in a 13-5 win over Memphis on Friday. She also went 2 for 4 in a 13-5 loss to Belmont on Friday.

Sims, a senior from Hauser, went 1 for 4 with two stolen bases and a run scored in a 4-3 loss to Youngstown State on Saturday. She also went 1 for 4 with a run scored in a 9-5 victory over Butler on Saturday, then went 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in a 7-1 victory over Western Carolina on Sunday.

The Sycamores are 11-12.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

Coles breaks school record

Marshall’s Darby Coles, a junior from North, came in third place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.44 seconds, which broke the school record and earned an NCAA Division I “B” cut. She also placed second in the 400 freestyle relay.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Smith posts comeback

Bellarmine’s Aubrey Smith made a huge comeback in her No. 3 singles match against Young Harris College’s Jing Dong after dropping the first set to prevail 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (3).

In the doubles competition, Smith, a junior from North, lost her No. 2 doubles match with teammate Jennifer Skonieczny 6-2 to Young Harris College’s Ana Rodriguez and Juli Boerr.

The Knights won the match 5-2 and improve to 6-0 this spring and 9-0 overall for the 2019-20 season.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Fateley begins spring season

Bellevue’s Autumn Fateley finished 16th individually with an overall score of 179 at the BU Spring Break Classic played at the par-71 Landa Park Golf Course at New Braunfels, Texas, on Sunday and Monday.

The Bruins finished third as a team, shooting a 342 on Sunday and a 320 on Monday to finish with a 662, which was 45 shots back of winner Texas Wesleyan.

Fateley, a sophomore from East, shot a round of 95 on Sunday, but bounced back with an 84 on Monday. Texas Wesleyan’s Joely Henderson and Brooke Sullivan tied for individual medalist at 152.
