VEVAY — Indiana State Police from the Versailles Post are investigating an early morning house fire on Lewis Drive in rural Switzerland County that resulted in six fatalities.

Shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday, the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a house fire at 9573 Lewis Drive, Vevay. The sheriff’s office and multiple fire departments responded to the scene and found the two story residence was fully engulfed.

Upon extinguishing the fire, it was determined there were multiple victims deceased inside the residence, said Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, Indiana State Police spokesman.

The Indiana State Police and Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office were then called in to lead the investigation. During the course of the investigation, it was determined that an adult male was able to escape from the residence without injury after the fire started. Six deceased victims were later located inside of the residence.

Autopsies on all deceased victims will be conducted today in Madison, Wheeles said. The Switzerland County Coroner’s Office is working to determine the identities of all six victims. The identities of the victims have not been released.

The Indiana Fire Marshal’s Office is working to determine the cause and origin of the fire.  Although the investigation is ongoing, foul play is not suspected at this time, Wheeles said.
