GREENSBURG
Carol Gene (Elliott) Theobald, 85, of Greensburg, passed away at 8:39 a.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2020 at Decatur County Memorial Hospital. She was born on April 10, 1934 in Burney, the daughter of Oren Lavelle and Margaret Imogene (Pumphrey) Elliott.
She spent her youth on the family farm near Burney, lived in Destin, Florida during her husband’s military service and most of her adult life in Greensburg. She attended Burney High School and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor.
Carol served as the Mt. Aerie Baptist church secretary for many years. Carol had a kind and generous heart and when her children were grown, she opened her home to provide childcare for others. She loved each of those children like her own. She was a member of the Westport Baptist Church and Carol held offices at the local, regional and state level of the American Baptist Women’s Association, and Baptist women’s missions. She volunteered for the Westport Baptist church clothing drive, was a past member of the Indiana State Sheep Breeders Association and served as a poll worker for many elections. Carol loved music and was blessed with a beautiful voice. She shared her joy for music by singing with her church choir. She liked football, baseball and was a fan of Purdue sports and the Indianapolis 500. She enjoyed being involved in 4-H with her children. She and Don managed the sheep barn gift shop at the Indiana State Fair for many years. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending their various sporting, band, choir and theater events. She took pride in her vegetable and flower gardens and enjoyed trips to the Smoky Mountains & National parks across the country. She loved sharing funny stories of family adventures, cooking for family gatherings, sharing family recipes and caring for her birds. Humming birds were her favorite. She faithfully mailed cards to express good wishes for birthdays, get well and encouragement.
She married Donald Wayne Theobald in Jackson Mississippi on June 21, 1951. He preceded her in death on April 8, 2020.
Survivors include her daughters, Laura (Dan) Curtis and Denise (Dan) Manus both of Greensburg; her sons, Donald Wayne (Traci) Theobald Jr. of West Harrison Indiana and Joseph “Joe” (Barb) Theobald of Clinton Ohio; her grandchildren, Jessica (Corey) Kaeser of Lawrenceburg, Lindsey Ovadia (Flemming) Holm of Wyoming, Ohio, Sara (Jay) Vanderbur of Greensburg, Andrew (Joell) Curtis of Brentwood, Tennessee, Stacie (Chris) Martin of Greensburg, Holly (Brandon) Upchurch of Greensburg, Katie (Robin) Ross of Plainfield, Michael (Brittany) Manus of Batesville, Christopher (Mallorae) Theobald of Walled Lake, Michigan and Bryce (Danielle) Theobald of San Ramon, California; her thirteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Donald Wayne Theobald; her sister, Ruth (Ken) Offutt; her brothers in law, Raymond (Pauline) Theobald, Roscoe (Vonda) Theobald, Robert, Everett (Eunice) Theobald; her sisters in law, Mabel Binford, Fern White and Alta Stevens and her dear friends, Howard (Elva) Binford.
The family has made the difficult decision to postpone services because of the current health safety mandate. There will be no visitation at this time, instead a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Burial will be at the Mt Aerie Cemetery.
