City utilities employee dies in truck-train collision

Statement from Columbus Mayor Jim Lienhoop:

A Columbus city employee died in a collision between a city-owned utilities truck and a Louisville & Indiana train Wednesday, city officials said.

The city of Columbus identified the City of Columbus Utilities employee as Brandon S. Hendershot, who had worked as a water distribution laborer since September 2019.

“He was beloved by his family and co-workers,” the statement from Columbus Mayor Jim Lienhoop said. “Our hearts go out to everyone who has been a part of Brandon’s life. My wife, Pam, and I both offer our sincere prayers and support to Brandon’s family.”

A dump truck driver was seriously injured in a truck train collision at Indianapolis Road and Long Road south of U.S. 31 at 12:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators are still at the scene and are asking motorists to avoid the area if possible.

Lifeline Helicopter has been called to the scene to transport the truck driver, who has serious, life-threatening injuries, Columbus police said.

A Louisville & Indiana train was involved in the crash. Assisting at the scene are the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department, Columbus Fire Department, Columbus Regional Hospital EMS and railroad officials.
