Columbus
Seeing the recent article in the paper about the city needing to make a decision about golf courses in Columbus has left me, along with many others, very upset. And of course Par 3 and Greenbelt seem to be first on the agenda as a possible elimination. Greenbelt is the home course for many men and women who choose to play there and do not want to go to Otter Creek. It’s a much better, friendlier course….and half of the holes are not roped off as cart path only.
If you drive by Greenbelt on any given morning you will see lots of cars in the parking lot as there are several men leagues going on. My ladies league on Monday evenings have anywhere from 15 to 20 golfers. There’s another one on Friday mornings as well. Of course there’s always a lull in play at some part of the day as there is at any course. People are working you know and if the courses lose money because of inclement weather, then all courses are subject to same losses. Greenbelt is needed for the average, everyday golfer who enjoys a decent round of golf and can easily walk if they want.
Since Keith VanDeventer has taken over the course has had much improvement and the course is in great shape. He should be commended for the job he’s done instead of worrying that the rug is going to be pulled out from under him. Before you shut anything down, why not take a poll of the actual golfers and what they want instead of some study by people who probably don’t even play there? If cuts are needed, close the Par 3 and establish some short tee beds for juniors at Greenbelt. That way they will be able to progress from one tee to the next as they progress in their abilities. Come on Columbus golfers, let our voices be heard.
Save our Greenbelt.
