Tipton Lake Boulevard blocked for sinkholes

Caution barriers and road closed signs stretch across Tipton Lakes Boulevard where it intersects with Acron Drive in Columbus, Ind., Wednesday, June 17, 2020. The road was closed due to a sinkhole. Mike Wolanin | The Republic.

All lanes of Tipton Lakes Boulevard are closed from the east side of Tree Line Drive/Line Oak Drive to the west side of Black Hawk Drive.

This closure is due to an emergency sinkhole and pipe failure, city street department officials said. Motorists must find another route and the closure will remain in effect until further notice.

Dave Hayward, executive director of public works and city engineer, reported that there are sinkholes on both the westbound and eastbound sides of the street.

“It’s just the nature of the soils and the type of pipe that was used out there,” he said at Tuesday’s Board of Works meeting. “It’s not holding up very well.”

The board of works approved a request to contract Best Excavating to fix the sinkholes. Their emergency quote for the repair was $34,595, Hayward said.

“I believe we gave them until July 10 to get that done,” Hayward said.
