Letter: Don’t take COVID-19 threat lightly

I have been somewhat shocked, though not surprised, at how so many people have stopped wearing masks.

There are many places that are still mandatory. I appreciate them.

A month ago, you could go shopping and see that 75% were wearing masks. Once the government started lessening the restrictions and opening businesses, it seems as though everyone thinks it’s suddenly safe. This is quite dangerous and is reckless thinking.

Just because restrictions are lighter does not by any way means the virus miraculously disappeared or lessened. Just because we wish COVID was gone or that it never happened does not erase it. It’s still here. It is now spiking, particularly with young people – no surprise there either. We hear that it is mainly attacking older age groups, but no one is exempt. They are harder hit when they get it, but anyone at any age is at risk.

What I see right now is a lot of careless behavior. If everyone treated it as a serious threat and took the necessary precautions, then we can fight it. As long as there are those who take it lightly, it will continue to spread and to kill.
