A local man has been arrested on felony charges after Columbus police received a report of shots fired on Thursday afternoon.
At approximately 12:45 p.m., CPD officers were sent to the area of Ninth Street and California Street in regards to a report of a firearm that was discharged during an altercation in the area, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.
Officers recovered evidence at the scene of the altercation and noted that a nearby parked vehicle was struck by the gunfire.
A man later identified as Christopher L. Williams, 25, was seen running in the area and stopped by officers, Harris said. The officers observed Williams drop a bag near a tree in the 1400 block of Sycamore Street. Inside the bag was a loaded 9mm handgun as well as ammunition and personal property that belonged to Williams, Harris said.
Williams was placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was remanded to their custody with a 48 hour hold on preliminary charges of criminal recklessness with a firearm (Level 5 felony) and possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon (Level 4 Felony).
The investigation in this case is ongoing and additional charges are possible as the investigation continues, Harris said.
