Olympians, Panthers to meet in 1st round

As the top two teams in the Columbus East Sectional, there was a strong chance the host Olympians and Bloomington South would meet at some point next week.

As it turns out, East will face the Class 4A No. 8 Panthers in the opening round. The teams will play at around 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in a rematch of Tuesday’s battle won by the Olympians in four sets.

"I like the draw," East coach Ellyn McIntosh said. "I like to get a good start right off the bat. I can get the girls prepared for B-South. It gets us focused and ready for the next game."

Columbus North will play in the first opening-round game against East Central at 7 p.m. Oct. 13. The winner will play Martinsville in the first semifinal at 11 a.m. Oct. 17.

"We will definitely look forward to that first match," North coach Quin Shoultz said. "It will be a fresh and new opponent for us. Our girls are ready to play, and I know they’re excited to get things rolling."

The East-Bloomington South winner will play the Bloomington North-Bedford North Lawrence winner in the second semifinal at around 12:30 p.m. Oct. 17. The sectional final is at 7 p.m. that evening.

The second first-round match on Oct. 15 will feature the host Lancers and Greenwood Christian Academy, with that winner taking on Morristown at around 12:30 p.m. Oct. 17.

"I would rather have played in the first round," Hauser coach Jeff Case said. "But it’s all right. We’ll just wait until Saturday."

Class A No. 1 Trinity Lutheran will play Oldenburg Academy at 6 p.m. Oct. 15 in the first round of the Trinity Sectional. The winner will play Crothersville or Jac-Cen-Del in the semifinal at around 12:30 p.m. Oct. 17.
