Teen orchestra at plaza

Carlos Lopez, 15, conducts the small chamber orchestra Octo Carmonia during a rehearsal at Terrace Lake Church in Columbus, Ind., Thursday, July 29, 2020. The group, consisting of teenage musicians, was started by Lopez. Mike Wolanin | The Republic

High school student Carlos Lopez’s chamber orchestra of peers is slated to perform a free concert at 6 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Bartholomew County Public Library Plaza, 536 Fifth St. in downtown Columbus.

The home-schooled Lopez, a flutist, and his work with the group of 10 young musicians was the subject of a recent Republic feature story. The group, which began with eight people, was named Octo Carmonia, Latin for harmony of eight.

“The best part of this,” he said then, “is the chance to serve the community.”

Lopez, who knew no English when he arrived in Columbus from Ecuador, has said the performance will include “classic spiritual songs.”

The concert also will be livestreamed on the library’s Facebook page.
