Local man arrested on felony drug dealing charges

A local man was arrested on multiple felony drug charges after his vehicle was stopped and officers located over 100 grams of methamphetamine on Tuesday afternoon in Columbus.

The investigation and arrest happened near 11th and Washington streets as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

At approximately 5:15 p.m., an officer from the Columbus Police Department Intelligence Led Policing Unit, which is comprised of law enforcement officers from CPD as well as the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department, stopped a vehicle being driven by Charles A. Sims Harris, 45, of 1837 Washington Street, Columbus, Harris said.

Harris said officers spoke to Sims, who was argumentative and reached under his seat as the officer initially approached the vehicle.

The officer requested a law enforcement K9 to respond to the scene and a Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department K9 and officer arrived a short time later, Harris said. The canine alerted to the odor of narcotics inside the vehicle and Sims was detained, Harris said.

During a search of the vehicle, officers located a large amount of methamphetamine under the driver’s seat of Sims’ vehicle, Harris said. Officers also located cocaine and prescription pills inside the car, Harris said.

Sims was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was remanded with a 48-hour hold on the following preliminary charges:

Dealing in methamphetamine

Dealing in a narcotic drug

Possession of methamphetamine

Possession of a narcotic drug

Possession of a narcotic drug

Possession of cocaine

The Bartholomew County Joint Narcotics Enforcement Team assisted with the ongoing investigation, Harris said.
