Columbus police arrested a local woman following a vehicle pursuit on Monday evening after they received a report of theft at a local business.
At approximately 8:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to Rural King, 2985 N. National Road, in regards to a shoplifting incident, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.
When the officers arrived, they were directed by employees to a blue passenger car in the parking lot, Harris said. When the officers approached the vehicle, the driver, who was later identified as Denise L. Bruton, 54, of 3112 Wedgewood Court, Columbus, started the car and fled the parking lot, Harris said.
Harris said CPD officers pursued Bruton, with their patrol vehicle’s lights and sirens activated, but she refused to stop. Officers continued to pursue Bruton until she stopped on Rockyford Road near Downing Place where a felony traffic stop was conducted, Harris said.
Bruton was taken into custody and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of theft, resisting law enforcement in a vehicle, and driving while suspended with a prior conviction, jail officials said. Her bond was set at $7,500 and she was released under the jail’s program which allows qualifying defendants to be released without posting bail.
