COLUMBUS, INDIANA
Alma “Elaine” Marston passed away Wednesday October 21, 2020 in Columbus, Indiana.
Elaine was born in September, 1930 to the late Wilmer “Hickory” and Alma Harrison in Bedford, Indiana. She is an alumnus of the Class of 1948 from Columbus North High School. She attended Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana where she was member of the Tri-Delt Sorority. While at Franklin College she met her life’s partner, Ted L. Marston. They married in 1950 and shared their lives together until Ted passed in 2016; a partnership of 65 years. They made their home in Columbus, Indiana where Ted was an executive with Cummins Engines. In their later years they lived on Harrison Lake and spending winters in Marco Island, Florida. Elaine and Ted loved being by the waters.
Elaine is survived by her two children, Missie (Tom) Schulz of Louisville, Kentucky and Mike Marston of Edwards, Colorado; and by her grandchildren, TJ, Nathan, Matthew and Alex Schulz and Theo, Max, Frankie and Lola Marston.
Elaine is predeceased by her four siblings, Jody (Schorr), Jannie (Armuth), Jim Harrison and Harold Harrison. The three sisters had a brief career as the “Harrison Sisters,” a singing group entertaining at county fairs and other local events in the region. Elaine’s love of music was certainly evident at an early age. She is self-taught on the piano, playing “by ear” almost any song she heard. She was always happy to play and shared her talents at nursing and retirement homes in the area, and at gatherings of families and friends. The sing-a-alongs and oft remembered songs were sure to bring a smile. She continued playing for the residents after moving to the Four Seasons Retirement Center in Columbus, Indiana.
Elaine was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever she was. She volunteered with First Call for Help and at the Thrift Store in Columbus, Indiana. While spending winters in Florida, Elaine and Ted sponsored and volunteered to help with disadvantaged youth in Immokalee, Florida.
She will be missed for her music and her empathy. Elaine will be interred in Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus, Indiana Friday October 30, 2020. The graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. in the Garden of Gethsemane; Chaplain Annette Barnes will officiate. A celebration of her life will be scheduled when circumstances permit. Gifts in her memory may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, 2626 East 17th Street, Columbus, IN 47201, Foundation for Youth, 405 Hope Avenue, Columbus, Indiana 47201 or Love Chapel, 311 Center Street, Columbus, Indiana 47201.
