COLUMBUS
Michael D. Copple, 67, passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2020 with loved ones by his side at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana. Mike was born on April 18, 1953 in Washington, Indiana to Thomas and Phyllis Copple.
Mike was the kind of man who, with his quick wit and charm, could light up any room he walked into. He always had a hug for the ladies and a handshake for a friend. Mike loved his family deeply and worked hard to protect them and see that they always had everything they needed, he also fought hard to defend the rights of others.
Mike retired from Cummins after 41 years of service and served as a shop steward and DWU Board Member for over 15 years. In his younger days, he loved working with his brother Tom, repairing vehicles and eventually started his own business as owner and operator of M & J Body Shop and Auto Sales. Formerly, he was also co-owner of Bartholomew County Water Conditioning, served on the Board of Flat Rock Baptist Cemetery and Driftwood Utilities, Inc., and along with his wife, managed All in 1 Self Storage in Columbus.
Mike bought his first Harley Davidson motorcycle when he turned 50 years old and loved riding it as much as he could with his wife on the back and his daughter alongside. Many trips were enjoyed with family and friends.
Mike is survived by his wife, Janie Copple; his daughter, Michelle Copple (Linda), both of Columbus; and his brother, Thomas (Barb) Copple of Edinburgh, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Peggy Lynn Copple; his brother, Francis W. Copple; and his nephew, Brooks Copple.
Visitation for Mike will be held Friday, November 6 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Myers-Reed Chapel. Additional Visitation will be Saturday, November 7 from 1:30 p.m. until the service time on Saturday.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, November 7 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church. Interment will immediately follow at Flat Rock Baptist Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations in Mike’s name may be made to the perpetual care fund for Flat Rock Baptist Cemetery.
Words cannot express how much he was loved and how much he will be missed. Mike is in God’s loving arms now, surrounded by family and friends who passed before him, but he will forever be in our heart and mind.
