NAPPANEE, IN
Reta Mae Slaughter, age 80, Nappanee, passed away at 1:35 pm, Saturday, November 7, 2020 at her residence. She was born July 3, 1940 in Howard County to Howard and Mary Weeks. Reta was a graduate of Ball State University Teachers College. On August 26, 1962, she married Richard Steven Slaughter Jr. in Cassville. He preceded her in death on June 7, 2016. Her son, Dan Slaughter preceded her in death on May 9, 2001. Reta moved to Nappanee in 2018 to be near her daughter, but prior to that lived in Columbus, IN.
Reta was an elementary school teacher for more than 40 years, especially dedicated to introducing students to the wonders of science. She and her husband traveled extensively, visiting several countries in Europe and the Canadian Rockies, as well as many states from Maine to California, and Hawaii and Alaska. The couple also enjoyed restoring Willys Jeepsters, belonging to clubs and attending meets throughout the region.
Reta was a devoted wife to Steve for 53 years, but her biggest pride remained her grandchildren. She often hosted all of them for sleepovers at the same time, and holidays were an extravaganza of treats and presents. Her walls, refrigerator door and shelves were filled with their photos and accomplishments, and she attended as many of their activities as possible.
Surviving are her daughters, Jennifer Slaughter, Indianapolis and Stephanie (Jeff) Middaugh, Nappanee; and daughter-in-law, Paige Slaughter, Zionsville. Her beloved grandchildren include Lindsey Slaughter, Madison (Brendan) Dudas, Jacob Harris, Anna (Brett) Dunn, Cooper Middaugh, Mary Slaughter, Rebecca Slaughter and Wesley Middaugh; and great grandchildren Kevin Dudas and Tristan Dudas.
A memorial service will be planned for a later date at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
Memorial contributions may be given to Covenant House.
Arrangements are with Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee.
