Covenant Christian, Chatard win state football titles

Covenant Christian stopped a 2-point conversion attempt with 1:30 remaining Saturday to hold on for a 41-40 win against South Adams in the Class A state football championship at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The win by the Warriors overshadowed a state title-game record 480 passing yards by the Starfires’ James Arnold and 547 total yards by South Adams. The teams’ combined 1,019 yards also was a state finals record.

Micah Wilson ran for 236 yards and a touchdown for Covenant Christian (15-0), which led 27-6 at halftime. The Starfires finished 13-1.

Class 3A

Bishop Chatard extended its all-time record to 15 state championships with a 42-14 win against Danville.

Carter St. John completed 16 of 19 passes for 174 yards and three touchdowns, and Tommy Hannon carried 22 times for 112 yards and three scores for the Trojans (13-1). Thomas Coleman caught seven passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns.

Kale Payne completed 7 of 18 passes for 65 yards and a score for the Warriors (11-1).
