Jennings deputies identify individuals involved in Dec. 4 shooting

JENNINGS COUNTY — The Jennings County Sheriff’s Department has not made any arrests following a shooting that occurred at a residence in the northwestern part of the county on Dec. 4.

At 7:30 p.m., deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 7000 block of North County Road 900W located in Geneva Township.

The incident occurred when Ryan Perry, 37, of Hope, went to the residence of Ashton Ayers, 51, in an attempt to locate a female acquaintance, Chief Deputy Dave Turner said.

Deputies said that Perry tried to gain entrance into the home when a physical altercation took place between him and Ayers. Turner said that Perry was shot with a handgun in the abdomen by Ayers after he attempted to enter the home a second time about 10 minutes after the first altercation.

Turner said that there were “several” witnesses in the home when the shooting took place.

Perry left the residence after getting shot and drove to the Elizabethtown Fire Department, where he received medical treatment, and was later flown from the scene to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment, deputies said. Perry is still in the hospital recovering from his injuries, Turner said.

Turner said that the investigation, which is being conducted with the Indiana State Police, is ongoing and that a report will be forwarded to the Jennings County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if a criminal act was committed.
