Club Olympia Swim team members took part in two competitions last weekend in Fishers. Fishers was one of the regional sites for the 18-and-under National Championships.
Brady Beyer, a 15-year-old sophomore at Columbus East, won the 200-yard breaststroke and 100 breaststroke for the Fishers site. He had six top-five finishes and made the finals in all eight of his events.
Nalanie Cortez, a 15-year-old sophomore at Columbus North, won the 200 butterfly and 100 freestyle for the Fishers site. She had five top-five finishes and made the finals in all six of her events.
Meanwhile, several other Club Olympia swimmers competed in the Santa Claus Classic, also at Fishers, against clubs from Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.
Tony Machavariani won the 8-and-under 25 freestyle, 25 breaststroke, 50 backstroke, 50 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 25 backstroke, 50 breaststroke, 50 freestyle and 25 butterfly, placing in the top five for 10U in three of those events. He has Indiana Divisional qualifying times in nearly all of his 10U events.
Josh Pendleton won the 10U 200 individual medley, 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 50 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. He has qualified for all Age Group State Championship 10U events.
Arya Kichambare finished third in the 8U 50 butterfly, 25 butterfly and 25 backstroke and had five top-five and nine top-10 finishes. Lily Pendleton had four 8U top-five finishes.
Connelly Furnish had two 12U top-five and five top-10 finishes and made her first state cut in the 50 breaststroke.
Misha Machavariani finished second in the 13-and-over 200 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke and third in the 500 freestyle. He had six top-five finishes and top-10s in all nine of his events.
Ashley Freel won the 13-and-over 50 backstroke and 200 butterfly, took second in the 500 butterfly and was fourth in the 200 freestyle, 400 IM, 100 freestyle and 500 freestyle. She had top-10 finishes in all nine of her events.
Maggie Johnson had five top-five and nine top-10 finishes in her nine 13-and-over events. Hope Westphal had two top-five and eight top-10 finishes in her nine 13-and-over events.
Todd Hundley had three 13-and-over top-10 finishes. Ethan Hall had one 13-and-over top-10 and achieved Divisional qualifying times in two events.
Swimmers compete in Michiana Meet
Earlier this fall, Club Olympia competed in the Michiana Meet at Northridge High School against teams from northern Indiana and Michigan. With 20 swimmers, Club Olympia finished third behind Michiana and Northridge, both of which had more than 50 swimmers.
Freel led Club Olympia with 157 points on nine first-place and one second-place finish in her 10 events. Tony Machavariani and Josh Pendleton each scored 144 points on nine wins in their 10 events.
Westphal won three events and scored 134 points. Cortez scored 128 points on two firsts and nine top-five finishes. Beyer, with six top-fives, and Misha Machavariani, with five top-fives, also scored more than 100 points.
Also scoring for Club Olympia were Johnson (94), Cole Ehara (83), Connelly Furnish (60), Cassidy Furnish (49.5), Braylee Moore (48), Chad Kelly (47), Lily Pendleton (43), Tynlee Mollenhoff (41), Kichambare (34), Daniella Preston (17), Alexa Mollehnoff (13), Brooklyn Pendleton (11) and Lovely Panda (five).
HOCKEY
Icemen sweep pair from Shamrocks
The Columbus Icemen swept Westfield and 4-1 and 4-3. Brayson Bennett led the team with four goals and one assist. Ethan Kuniewicz netted two goals and two assists; Evan Federle recorded one goal and two assists; Logan Morris scored one goal; John Ferguson had 3 assists and Blaine Humphrey, Caleb McGhehey, Alex Clarkand Joe Neal all added one assist. Cam Stattenfield and Jake McMullen each were in net one game.
Peewee Flames A fell to the Midwest Blackbirds 4-1 and 7-6 and beat the Dayton Stealth 8-2 and 7-1. Eduardo Aranda led the team with seven goals and one assist. Keaton Russel netted three goals and two assists, Drew Weed and Carson King each recorded two goals and one assist, Sawyer Patterson scored two goals, Kaitlyn Netser and Will Jamerson each added one goal and two assists, Tsukasa Udo contributed one goal and one assist, Ryan McGhehey and River Degner each scored one goal and Tyson Tyner had two assists. Lane Barringer was in net.
The Bantams played the Midwest Blackbirds, losing 6-2 and tying 2-2. Jack Warble scored two goals, Westin Davis and Collijah Kenney each added one goal and Dane Weizapfel had one assist. Zach Goggins was in net.
Squirt A fell to Southbend Irish Rovers AA twice by 4-1 scores. Carter Davis and Thomas King each scored one goal, and Brooks Larsh had one assist. Canyon Long was in net with a 72.41 save percentage.
Squirt B lost to the South Indy Sharks 6-3 and 7-5. Cooper Ross netted two goals and one assist. Logan Barringer and Noah Doig each scored two goals, Maximilliano Perez and Henry Jamerson each had 1 goal, Bentley Hampton recorded three assists and Nolan Sparkman added one assist. Cayden Long was in net one game with a 73.91 save percentage, and Knox Coen was in net one game with a 65.0 save percentage.
Peewee Flames B fell to the Indy Fuel Red 3-0 and 4-0. Gabe Marsh was in net.
Mite Flames teams post four wins
The Columbus Mite Flames Blue went 4-2-1 to finish second, and the Mite Flames Orange went 4-3 to finish third in last weekend’s Frozen Puck Shootout.
The Mite Flames Orange beat Lexington Thoroughbreds Blue 10-0, tied Fort Wayne Force Grey 3-3, beat Troy (Ohio) Bruins 13-0 and Lexington Thoroughbreds Blue 15-1, lost to Fort Wayne Force Grey 4-0 and beat Troy Bruins 16-2 before falling to Fort Wayne Force Grey 1-0 in the final. Thomas Degner led the team with 22 goals and one assist. Jonah Oliphant netted 10 goals and three assists, Oliver Jamerson recorded nine goals and one assist, Duncan Saner had six goals and five assists, Rylee Koch added four goals and two assists, Lucas Oswald contributed four goals and one assist, Carsen Sims had two goals and three assists and Colton Pepmeier had one goal and three assists. Dalton Larsh was in net four games with an 86.21 save percentage, and Cayden Long was in net three games with an 86.27 save percentage.
The Mite Flames White beat Lexington Throughbreds White 7-0, fell to Fort Wayne Force Green 5-2 and Fort Wayne Force Blue 3-1, beat Lexington Thoroughbreds White 8-0 and Fort Wayne Force Blue 3-1 and lost to Fort Wayne Force Blue 5-4 before blanking Lexington Thoroughbreds White 6-0 in the third-place game. Maddox Coy led the team with 14 goals and one assist. Carter Harris netted seven goals and two assists, Lukas Josza recorded four goals and one assist, Daniel Wallace had three goals and three assists, Hiromu Udo added one goal and two assists, Chance Mathis posted one goal and one assist, Larsh scored one goal and Avery Orgass notched one assist. Cayden Long was in net all seven games with an 88.62 save percentage.
BROOMBALL
Steagles, Hansons stay unbeaten
The Steagles and Hansons remained unbeaten with wins last weekend in the Columbus Broomball League.
The Steagles (4-0-1) beat CCA 2-1 behind goals from Ben Eckhart and Josh D’Anna. Max Warr scored for CCA (3-2).
Hansons (3-0-2) blanked Jennings County BC (0-4-1) 5-0. Matt Street netted three goals, and Ryan Ingalls added two.
Our Name Is Earl edged Toyota Tsunamis 4-3. Tom Kareus, Darren Eckerly, Cesar Hernandez and Dani Kareus scored for Earl (2-2-1). Erich Miller, Jimmy Robertson and Greg McNealy had the goals for Tsunamis (0-4-1).
