"Deck the Town" voting underway

HOPE — Voting will soon wrap up in the annual “Deck The Town” competition in Hope.

Sponsored by the Main Street of Hope, the “Deck The Town” competition is for the best exterior holiday lights and displays at private homes within the town limits. Photos have been posted on a social media site, so everybody — no matter where they live — can vote on what they believe are the best exterior holiday decorations.

By the time the entry deadline arrived Wednesday night, photos of 18 homes decorated for the holidays had been placed on the Main Street of Hope’s Facebook page. You can vote for your favorite simply by going to that page and clicking on LIKE next to your favorite.

As of noon Friday, some early favorites had emerged. The residence at 1607 Manor Drive has received 102 votes of approval, putting them temporarily in first place. However, the second most popular decorated house at that time — located at 219 Walnut St. — had 92 votes. Rounding out the top five in early voting Friday were 2007 Neal Drive (52 votes), 171 S. Midway Court (35 votes) and 344 Vine St. (31 votes).

But favorites and rankings are likely to change significantly before voting ends tonight, because there were a number of instances where only a few votes separating one house from another.

“Deck The Town” is a competition that is carried out with tongue firmly placed in cheek. The owners of the most liked home will receive temporary custody of a traveling “Leg Lamp.” It’s the same style as the table lamp in the shape of a woman’s leg wearing a fishnet stocking featured in the 1983 holiday film classic “A Christmas Story.”

While the winner only gets to keep the lamp until mid-January, their name and address will be permanently placed on a commemorative plaque.
