Verizon putting up new small cell towers

Verizon Wireless is putting up new small cell towers in six different locations in the community.

On Dec. 1, the Board of Works approved improvement for right of way permits, permits to excavate and requests for special use of right of way for each location.

Executive director of public works and city engineer Dave Hayward said during the meeting that these locations are 922 Fifth Street, 389 Central Avenue, 509 Central Avenue, 1626 McKinley Avenue, 1842 McKinley Avenue and 1423 Sixth Street.

Hayward said that these small cell towers mount on the top of street lights.

“Some of the new equipment will actually be replacing existing street light poles," he said. "And then the new pole that’s put up then would be in the same location and would have a street light on it in addition to the cell tower equipment."

He said at the board meeting that the city has worked to "minimize the impacts of these locations" and that most are not in very residential areas. He also said that in some cases, the cell tower will use a steel pole that’s "painted to match the neighborhood."
