Westport man accused of driving wrong way on Central, nearly hitting CPD vehicle

COLUMBUS, Ind. — A Westport man was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated early Friday morning after he nearly crashed into a CPD patrol vehicle with his child in his truck.

At approximately 1:40 a.m. Friday, a CPD patrol officer observed a truck traveling north in the southbound lanes of Central Avenue near Seventh Street, Columbus police said. The wrong way driver nearly struck the CPD officer’s vehicle and he stopped the suspect, who was later identified as Anthony W. Harris, 43, of Westport, police said.

While speaking with Harris, the officers noted that his balance was poor and his movements were lethargic, police said. The officers also observed that Harris’ young child was in the vehicle with him.

The officers gave Harris a portable breath test and the test showed his breath alcohol content was .147%. Harris was transported to the Columbus Regional Hospital for a certified blood alcohol test. At the conclusion of the test Harris was placed under arrest. He was later remanded to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated-endangerment and neglect of a dependent.
