COLUMBUS, Ind. — Groups or organizations wanting to hire off-duty Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies for special events will now have to do so through a third-party.

Bartholomew County has signed a two-year agreement with a Houston, Texas-based company called Off Duty Management. Under the terms of the agreement approved by the county commissioners, the company will manage requests for off-duty officers, as well as handle scheduling, attendance, payroll and invoicing.

In addition, when off-duty deputies are working through Off Duty Management, each will be covered by the company’s workers’ compensation and health insurance programs, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s road division commander Capt. Dave Steinkoenig said.

That means if a deputy is injured while off-duty while working during a special event, neither the sheriff’s department nor local taxpayers will be liable for medical expenses or disability payments, Steinkoenig said.
