COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County Sheriff detectives believe a confrontation over loud music from a vehicle near apartments on Main Street in Taylorsville led to a shooting there early Wednesday morning.
Sheriff deputies were sent to the 9400 block of Main Street in Taylorsville at 5:32 a.m. Wednesday where they found Justin Black with a bullet wound to the stomach, investigators said. Black received treatment from Columbus Regional Hospital EMS before he was taken by Lifeline helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital, where he is recovering, deputies said.
The suspected shooter, who has been identified, has been cooperating with detectives, Sheriff Matt Myers said. That person and Black did not know each other, he said.
Detective Capt. Chris Roberts said investigators have learned the incident unfolded in two parking lots near the apartment complex, one the apartment’s parking lot, and the other a gravel lot across the street which is sometimes used for overflow parking.
Loud music was reportedly playing from the victim’s car parked in the gravel lot across from the apartments, and the individual who is believed to have shot him came out of the apartments where a confrontation ensued in the apartment parking lot, Roberts said.
After the shooting, the suspected shooter’s girlfriend called 911 to summon help, Roberts said.
An investigation is continuing into whether Black was armed during the incident as a knife was found under a nearby car after the incident, Myers said.
Investigators have declined to identify the type of gun used in the shooting at this time. Sheriff deputies secured the weapon involved in the incident.
