BOYS SWIMMING

Locals have top times

Columbus East had the fastest qualifying times in four events, and Columbus North had the top times in two events in Friday night’s preliminaries of the boys swimming North Sectional.

The swimming finals will begin at 3 p.m. today. Diving will start at 11 a.m. and will finish before the swimming begins.

East’s Brady Beyer has the fastest qualifying time in the 500-yard freestyle (4 minutes, 49.96 seconds) and second-fastest in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.31). Mason Curry had the top time in the 100 butterfly (54.33).

Beyer, Curry and Chad Kelly teamed with Dathan Wolf for the fastest time in the 200 medley relay (1:40.83) and with Branson Young for the top time in the 400 freestyle relay (3:23.76).

North’s Daniel Utterback has the fastest time in the 200 freestyle (1:46.38) and second-fastest in the 100 freestyle (47.83). Christopher Lee is fastest in the 100 backstroke (52.76) and second-fastest in the 50 freestyle (21.03), which is under the state standard.

The Bull Frogs’ David Fry, Will Russell, Aidan McAlister and Matthew Goble are second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:32.25). Carlos Fabian Aguilar, Isaac Proffitt, McAlister and Fry are second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:25.78).

Winners in each event and those meeting the state standards in today’s finals earn automatic berths to next weekend’s state finals. If those numbers from the state’s 20 sectionals don’t reach 32, the next-best times are added.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Crusaders win, advance

Columbus Christian jumped out to a 35-13 halftime lead and held on for a 59-47 win against Martinsville Tabernacle Christian in the opening round of the ICSAA South Regional.

Gabe Ridder scored a career-high 33 points to lead Crusaders (16-13). Jacob Conrad added nine.

Columbus Christian will play Calvary Christian (17-11) in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. today. The winner will play Evansville Christian or Pleasant View Christian in the final at 7:30 p.m. today.

East falls to Madison

MADISON — Madison jumped out to a 21-9 lead after one quarter and went on to hand Columbus East a 74-54 Hoosier Hills Conference defeat.

Tyler Boyer led the Olympians (1-16, 0-6) with 13 points. Ben Major scored 11, and Casey Bartholomew added nine.

Rebels top Panthers

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County led 29-27 at halftime, but Southwestern (Hanover) rallied for a 77-63 victory.

Carson McNulty led the Panthers (10-8) with 21 points. Keegan Manowitz added nine points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Cougars edge Warriors

SEYMOUR — Trinity Lutheran outscored Scottsburg 11-7 in overtime to pull out a 70-66 victory.

Tyler Goecker led the Cougars (7-12) with 31 points. Jack Marksberry added 13.
