COLUMBUS, Ind. — St. Bartholomew Catholic School hosted a luminary event Thursday night near the school to remember the late Helen Heckman.

Each student has been given a luminary bag to create with photos, prayers or other items that remind them of Heckman, who was St. Bartholomew principal. She died Feb. 4.

The community, school families and parishioners were invited to walk or drive by the tribute.

The 57-year-old Heckman had been principal at St. Bartholomew for the past seven years. She died after suffering a spontaneous brain hemorrhage, according to her obituary.

Among her honors, she was awarded the 2020 Lead. Learn. Proclaim. Award from the National Catholic Educational Association for dedication, support and commitment to excellence in Catholic education. She was selected for the award from more than 150,000 teachers and administrators, as well as diocesan leaders and organizations dedicated to the nation’s Catholic schools.

Enrollment at St. Bartholomew rose 18 percent to 400-plus under her leadership.
