Brinegar wins Big Ten 1,650 freestyle title

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Indiana University redshirt sophomore Michael Brinegar led from start to finish in winning the 1,650-yard freestyle in 14 minutes, 38.26 seconds at the Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Columbus native also finished sixth in the 500 freestyle in 4:19.70 and 17th in the 400 individual medley in a personal-best 3:48.65. He has qualified for the NCAA Championships in all three events.

Brinegar, who helped lead the eighth-ranked Hoosiers to a runner-up team finish, was named to the All-Big Ten squad.

Rooks qualifies for NCAA Tournament

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Indiana’s Graham Rooks, a redshirt sophomore from Columbus East, finished sixth at 149 pounds in the Big Ten Wrestling Championships to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year.

Rooks’ brother, sophomore Cayden Rooks, finished 10th at 141 for the Hoosiers. Nick South, another sophomore from East, finished 10th at 165.

Coles selected All-Conference-USA

Darby Coles, who won the 50-yard freestyle in the Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championships, has been named to the All-C-USA team in that event.

Coles, a senior from Columbus North, also was named to the second team in the 100 freestyle. She was a third-team selection as part of Marshall’s 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay teams.
