Turning Point Domestic Violence Services is reaching out to the community seeking participants in this year’s Denim Day as part of an awareness campaign during Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Denim Day, on April 28, is the day when the Columbus community joins in solidarity in raising awareness about sexual assault and supporting survivors of violence by wearing denim.
At this time last year, the community was sheltering in place due to the continuing global pandemic, Turning Point officials said. They asked that regardless of where your workplace is located this year, you can still advocate for a safer community through Denim Day.

Turning Point will respond with additional information and opportunities to receive materials for this year’s Denim Day. The organization is asking participants on April 28 to share photos of you, your co-workers or your family wearing denim and post them to Turning Point’s Facebook or Instagram accounts.
The Denim Day campaign was triggered by a ruling from the Italian Supreme Court when a rape conviction was overturned. The justices decided that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans to work in solidarity with the victim.
Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against destructive attitudes about sexual assault.
