North downs Cougars

BLOOMINGTON — Class 4A No. 2 Columbus North managed only two hits Thursday, but opened its Conference Indiana season with a 6-1 win at Bloomington North.

Will Baker allowed one run and four hits over the first five innings, and Reese Harmon gave up one hit in two shutout innings of relief for the Bull Dogs (5-0-1, 1-0), who took advantage of three Cougar errors. Kyler McIntosh and Jacob Bailey had the lone hits for North.

East blasts Owls

SEYMOUR — Columbus East led only 6-4 after three innings before scoring 10 times over the final four frames to pull away for a 16-5 win at Seymour.

Parker Harrison went 3 for 4 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs and Kaden Wise went 3 for 4 with two doubles to lead the Olympians (2-2-1), who outhit the Owls 15-10. Ben Major went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Clayton Taylor went 2 for 4, and Josh Luedeke went 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs.

Taylor pitched the first three innings and picked up the win. Jose Martinez allowed only two hits and an unearned run over the final four innings in picking up the save.

Cougars nip Shiners

SEYMOUR — Lawson Woods and Tyler Goecker combined on a two-hitter to lead Trinity Lutheran to a 2-1 win against Rising Sun.

Woods pitched the first 6 1/3 innings to pick up the win for the Cougars (3-1). Goecker got the final two outs to earn the save.

North rallies for win

SHELBYVILLE — Columbus North trailed 5-1 after four innings before scoring five in the fifth and three in the sixth to pull out a 9-5 win at Shelbyville.

Kelsey Lovelace and Maddi Rutan each went 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs to lead the Bull Dogs (3-1), who outhit the Golden Bears 14-7. Lexi Heafner went 2 for 3 with two doubles, and Josie Lemons went 2 for 4 with two RBIs

Rutan pitched the final four innings to earn the win in relief of Meghan Waggoner.

East falls to Floyd

FLOYDS KNOBS — Columbus East pounded out 11 hits, but Floyd Central claimed a 17-7, six-inning Hoosier Hills Conference victory.

Addy Ross went 2 for 2 with two RBIs, Kerigan Greathouse went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Kenzie Foster went 2 for 3 and Julia Sitterding went 2 for 4 with a double for the Olympians (2-4, 0-1). Kaylee Cole had a triple and two RBIs.

Panthers rout Cougars

BLOOMINGTON — Taylor Mowery went 2 for 3 with a grand slam and five RBIs to lead Jennings County to a 16-5, five-inning win at Bloomington North.

Tori Lee went 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs, Lexi Doup went 2 for 3 with a triple and winning pitcher Kenzie Matern went 2 for 3 for the Panthers (2-4). Skylar Weber had four RBIs, Abby McDonald added three RBIs and Grace George had two RBIs.

BOYS GOLF

Jets top Eagles

Brown County’s Cooper VanNess won medalist honors with a 47, but Hauser posted a 207-246 win at Otter Creek.

Justin Gilliland and Caleb Wallace each shot 51 to lead the Jets. Brock Thalls carded a 52, Chase Martoccia added 53 and Daniel Taylor had a 54.

Clay Austin added a 65 for the Eagles. Bradley Arndt and Jordan Burnett each shot 67 and Dylan Taylor had a 71.

GIRLS TENNIS

Panthers stop Shawe

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County won four matches in straight sets in a 4-1 victory against Shawe Memorial.

Reagan Brown beat Abigail Hill 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Carmen Kopitzke downed Lauren Grote 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles for the Panthers (2-1). Liz Ertel and Sydney Carson topped Lina Leatherman and Jessica Lopez 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Hannah Green and Cassidy Mull beat Autumn Lantrem and Abbie Stewart 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Jennings’ Tatum Brown fell to Phoebe Grote 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

Cougars edge Spartans

SEYMOUR — Trinity Lutheran picked up its first win of the season, a 3-2 triumph against Southwestern (Shelby).

Sarah Lemming beat Kyla Robertson 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, Regan Cain downed Lauryn Blandell 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles for the Cougars (1-1). Katelyn Mensendiek and Kiley Zabel topped Faith Kelley and Ela Rice 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Trinity’s Erin Enzinger fell to Brooklyn Schneder 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Rebekah Brown and Drew Hubbard lost to Sydney Eberhold and MiKinley Correll 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles.

TRACK AND FIELD

Panthers take second

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County’s boys and girls both finished second in a home tri meet.

Seymour won the boys meet with 73.5 points to 55 for the Panthers and 38.5 for Bedford North Lawrence. Seymour’s girls scored 95 points to 36 for Jennings and 30 for Bedford.

Kenna Maschino won the shot put (34 feet, 8 1/4 inches) and discus (103-7) to lead the Panther girls.

Winners for the Jennings boys were Zane Ortlieb in the shot (44-3), Gavin Hendrix in the 1,600 meters (4 minutes, 54.1 seconds), Lane Elsner in the 800 (2:08.9), Brenden Baker in the 3,200 (10:32). The Panthers also took the 4×800 relay (8:50.6).
