Driver arrested after involvement in accident

COLUMBUS, Ind. — A local man was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated as well as a local warrant after he was involved in a traffic crash on Friday. At approximately 10:10 a.m., CPD officers were dispatched to the area of State Street and Pence Calla Street in regards to a two-vehicle crash.

When officers arrived, they noted that one of the drivers involved, Jonathan E. Beene, 43, of Columbus, appeared to be intoxicated, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Beene was unsteady on his feet and had the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, police said. The officers determined a short time later that Beene had a local failure to appear warrant for a prior DUI arrest. Beene was taken into custody and refused to cooperate with the DUI investigation, Harris said.

Beene was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital where officers applied for a later received a warrant for a blood draw. Beene was later remanded to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and the Bartholomew County warrant.
