North wins Avon invite
AVON — Fourth-ranked Columbus North beat three ranked opponents Saturday to capture the title at the Avon Invitational.
The Bull Dogs (11-0) edged No. 15 Jasper 3-2, blanked co-No. 9 Penn 5-0 and edged No. 7 Avon 3-2. Ashlie Wilson at No. 1 singles and Kathryn Wilson at No. 2 singles won all three of their matches in straight sets to lead North.
Jaline Tay and Tiffany Fu went 2-1 at No. 1 doubles. Siri Poludasu posted a win against Penn at No. 3 singles, and Arya Gotoh went 1-1 at No. 3 singles. Leah George an Zoe Bishop won a third-set supertiebreaker against Penn at No. 2 doubles.
The Bull Dogs were coming off a 4-1 win at No. 29 Seymour on Friday. Ashlie and Kathryn Wilson both won by 6-0 scores, while Tay and Fu won in straight sets at No. 1 doubles and Gotoh prevailed in a third-set supertiebreaker at No. 3 singles.
Panthers blank Rebels
NORTH VERNON — Jennings County won all five matches in straight sets Saturday in a 5-0 win against Southwestern (Hanover).
Reagan Brown beat Kyla Robertson 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Tatum Brown downed Lauryn Blondell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Carmen Kopitzke topped Brooklynn Schneider 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles for the Panthers (10-3).
Jennings Liz Ertel and Sydney Carson defeated Sydney Ebersold and McKinley Correll 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. Cassidy Mull and Hannah Green beat Faith Kelley and Ella Rice 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Eagles win one of three
MUNCIE — Brown County went 1-2 in Saturday’s Delta Invitational, falling to co-No. 9 Delta 6-0 and Muncie Burris 3-2 before beating Yorktown 4-1.
Londyn Koester and Katie Tipton at No. 1 doubles and Mattie Satter and Julia Burt at No. 2 doubles each went 2-1 for the Eagles (5-3). Anna Tipton at No. 1 singles and Anna Stogsdill at No. 2 singles each prevailed against Yorktown.
SOFTBALL
North sweeps Dragons
SELLERSBURG — Maddi Rutan homered and threw a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts to lead Columbus North to an 11-0 five-inning win at Silver Creek in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Emalee Heafner also homered and had two RBIs. Kirsten Danford went 2 for 3, Josie Lemmons went 2 for 4 and Lillian Mackey had a double and two RBIs.
In the second game, Peri Foust threw a three-hitter with nine strikeouts to lead the Bull Dogs (12-4) to a 5-1, five-inning victory. Aden Voss went 2 for 2, Meghan Waggoner hit a two-run homer and Kelsey Lovelace had two RBIs.
Hauser wins twice
OSGOOD — Class A co-No. 7 Hauser won a pair of games at Jac-Cen-Del Saturday, beating the host Eagles 14-2 in five innings and Providence 13-5.
Paige McDaniel and Kaydence Gates combined on a three-hitter against Jac-Cen-Del. Reagan Johnson went 3 for 3 with a triple, Kyra Meister went 3 for 4, Hannah Taylor went 2 for 4 with a double and a triple and McDaniel went 2 for 2.
McDaniel and Dani Steward combined on a seven-hitter against Providence. Reagan Johnson went 3 for 5, Hannah Johnson went 2 for 4 with a double and Meister and Taylor each went 2 for 5 for the Jets (15-2).
Lancers sweep Jackets
MORRISTOWN — Edinburgh took both games of a doubleheader in five innings Friday, winning 16-1 and 19-3.
Carly Cowan went 3 for 3 with a double and five RBIs in the opener. MacKenzie Bieker went 2 for 2 with two RBIs, Catey Streeval went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Mackenzie Whetstine went 2 for 3. Bieker and Gracie Long combined on a three-hitter.
In the second game, Kaitlyn Baley went 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs, Bieker went 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs, and Gracie Crawhorn went 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs and threw a five-hitter for the Lancers (8-7, 2-2). Mackenzie Whetstine went 2 for 3 with a triple, and Catey Streeval had two RBIs.
Trojans rally past Panthers
ST. LEON — Jennings County took the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh, but East Central answered with three in the bottom of the seventh Saturday to pull out a 7-6 win.
Delaynee McCreary had a home run and two RBIs for the Panthers (7-10).
Cougars fall to Mohawks
South Decatur dropped a pair of MHC games to Waldron, falling 22-19 on Friday and 11-8 on Saturday.
The Cougars led 19-9 going to fifth inning of Friday’s home game, but the Mohawks scored six runs in the fifth and seven more in the sixth. Loryn Pate went 3 for 6 with a double and four RBIs, Erynn Dyer went 2 for 6 with a double and Zorry Sharp had a double and two RBIs.
On Saturday at Waldron, Brook Somers went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Kassidy Haley went 2 for 3 with a double and Molly Eden went 2 for 4 with two RBIs for South Decatur (3-10, 1-3).
BASEBALL
North takes first loss
Class 4A No. 1 Columbus North lost for the first time this season, a 4-0 defeat against Louisville Trinity, the No. 1-ranked team in Kentucky.
Kyler McIntosh allowed three runs and eight hits in five innings for the Bull Dogs (17-1-1). Zach Wager gave up one run and two hits over the final two innings.
The Shamrocks limited North to three hits.
Jets sweep Eagles
OSGOOD — Hauser swept a doubleheader Saturday at Jac-Cen-Del, winning 7-2 and 10-7.
Frankie Poole went 2 for 3 with a home run, Levi Gollmer went 2 for 3 and Sam Miller went 2 for 4 in the opener. Clayton West and Zayne McCanlis combined on a six-hitter.
In the second game, Aaron Rork went 2 for 3 with a double, Bryce Trotter went 2 for 3, Kobe Meahl went 2 for 4 and Koby Johnson had a double and three RBIs for the Jets (11-5). Eli Miller and Alex Pattingill combined on a nine-hitter.
Bulldogs sweep Crusaders
CANNELTON — Columbus Christian dropped a pair of five-inning games Saturday at Cannelton, falling 14-4 and 16-6.
Owen Reed went 2 for 3, and Parker Walden had two RBIs in the first game for the Crusaders (2-4).
Panthers, Warriors split
NORTH VERNON — Jennings County bounced back from a 9-2 loss to Whiteland in Saturday’s opener with a 10-1 victory in the second game of a doubleheader.
Lane Zohrlaut went 2 for 3 in the opener for the Panthers.
In the second game, Ian Sawyer went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, and Carson McNulty and Ethan Brown each had two RBIs for Jennings (7-5). Keegan Manowitz threw a six-hitter.
BOYS GOLF
North second, East 10th
BEDFORD — No. 6 Columbus North finished second in Saturday’s Bedford North Lawrence Invitational with a 318. No. 2 Center Grove won with a 311, and Bedford was third with a 333 at Otis Park.
Luke Schneider tied for second individually with a 2-over-par 74 to lead the Bull Dogs. Tyler Wilks tied for fifth with a 79, Willy Davis tied for 10th with an 82, Luke VanDeventer added an 83 and Jacob Niedbalski had an 84.
Columbus East finished 10th with a 367. Pierce Arnholt led the Olympians with an 85, while Kody Reynolds carded an 86, Cole Schaefer added a 97, Spencer Erfmeier shot 99 and J.T. Kuhlman had a 101.
Knights outscore Jets
Hauser fell to South Dearborn 336-392 Saturday in an 18-hole match at Otter Creek.
Justice Gilliland led the Jets with a 93. Chase Martoccia carded a 94, Caleb Wallace added a 96, Brock Thalls shot 109 and Daniel Taylor had a 111.
UNIFIED TRACK
Bull Dogs finish third
BLOOMINGTON — Columbus North was missing all but a handful of athletes because of prom and finished third in the Conference Indiana meet.
Host Bloomington North won with 116 points. Bloomington South finished second with 103, and the Bull Dogs scored 93.
Sam King finished second in the shot put (46 feet, 2 1/2 inches), and Ty Ferguson took second in the 400 meters (1 minute, 4.68 seconds) to lead Columbus North. Gavin Bayne, Alana Cook, Ferguson and Carson Dibble were third in the 4×100 relay (58.30), and Jenna Lang finished fifth in the 100 (15.10) and sixth in the long jump (12-4).
Panthers 3rd, East 5th
Jennings County finished third, and Columbus East took fifth in Saturday’s Hoosier Hills Conference meet at East.
Bedford North Lawrence won the title with 133 points, while Seymour edged Jennings 112-111 for second. The Olympians finished with 87.
The Panthers had wins from Teagon Trotter in Flight 2 of the long jump (14-0), Gavin Proctor in Heat 2 of the 100 (15.93) and Joey Moran in Heat 2 of the 400 (1:04.99). Owen Bonesteel in Flight 2 of the long jump (13-1), James Hatton in Heat 1 of the 400 (1:07.02) each took second.
East’s Rachel Kuhlman won Heat 3 of the 100 (17.53), and Gabe Palaszczuk took Heat 4 of the 400 (1:23.89). Palaszczuk also finished second in Flight 3 of the long jump (7-8), and Austin Campbell was second in Flight 2 of the shot put (25-7).
