North Vernon police release name of victim

NORTH VERNON — The North Vernon Police Department has released the name of the victim in a suspected homicide that occurred Tuesday in Jennings County.

Robert D. Boyd, 56, North Vernon, has been identified as the deceased individual who was found on Tuesday in the 100 block of West Walnut Street in North Vernon.

Police said that Boyd, who died of a knife wound, is not family relation to William Steven “Billy” Smith, 45, North Vernon, who has been arrested on a preliminary murder charge. Smith is being held without bond at the Jennings County Jail.

Smith was arrested by local law enforcement after a five-hour search on Tuesday. Officers arrested Smith near West O&M Avenue east of the North Vernon Education and Training Center around 6 p.m.

Besides the murder charge, Smith also faces charges of robbery, theft and possession of methamphetamine, according to arrest records.

Police said that additional details on the investigation will be released in the coming days.
