JCHS students learn business, culinary skills through ‘food truck’ competition

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County High School teachers Tevin Shoultz and Denise Axsom recently hosted a "food truck" competition for their Introduction to Culinary Arts classes.

Groups were asked to create a business plan, vision board, menu with prices, work plan, mission statement, and mini food truck out of a cereal box. Each group was then responsible for making a sample dish from their menu to prepare for judges.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers and their students were provided monopoly money to judge and vote for the groups who they thought did the best overall. The group with the most points earned were deemed the winners of the competition.

The winners of Shoultz’s class were Fayth Hooten and Mackenzie Elmore with M & F Cupcakes and their Oreo chocolate cupcake.

The winners of Axsom’s two classes were Brett Silvey and Pablo Rodriguez (seventh period), with Mr. Taco featuring Mexican-inspired cuisine, and Makayla Stidham and Hannah Young (eighth period), with Pasta Paradise and their pasta-inspired dishes.

Winners were given customized aprons, and the three winning trucks were sent to the JCHS teachers’ lounge for faculty and staff to vote on.

The grand champions of the competition were Silvey and Rodriguez. Both were awarded a basket full of goodies and cooking tools.

“This was the first year of this type of classroom project, and we look forward to doing it again in the future," Axsom said. "It was one of the more popular projects this year.”

Rodriguez credited learning his skills by cooking for his family.

“I really enjoyed making and sharing what I do with my classmates," he said. "Hard work really pays off". “

Silvey added, “Everyone learned a little bit more about cooking and the project was a success.”
