Strand Associates celebrates 75 years

Staff Reports

Strand Associates, Inc., a consulting engineering firm founded in 1946 in Madison, Wisconsin, is celebrating its 75th continuous year of providing professional consulting engineering services to the public and private sectors.

Strand acquired SIECO, Inc. in Columbus in 2002 to complement and add unique expertise to its existing services.

In 2018, Strand was hired to extend the Columbus People Trail between 25th Street and Lincoln Park. This extension safely connected the nearly 30-acre Lincoln Park to several highly populated neighborhoods, as well as other sections of the 15-mile trail system, by enabling users to bypass 25th Street, one of the busiest thoroughfares in Columbus.

The path now passes under 25th Street and continues south along Haw Creek to a 107-year-old historic steel truss bridge over the creek, relocated from eastern Bartholomew County, which provides direct access to Lincoln Park.

This project received a 2019 American Council of Engineering Companies of Indiana (ACEC IN) Engineering Excellence Honor Award.

In 2017, the discharge permit for the town of Bargersville was revised to 1.0 mg/L total phosphorus limit and ongoing and anticipated future development in town was expected to increase flows beyond the treatment capacity of its wastewater treatment plant.

Strand was hired to design upgrades to both the capacity and treatment capabilities of the plant. Modifications expanding the plant’s capacity from 1.5 million gallons per day (MGD) to 2.0 MGD and adding a biological selector tank to remove phosphorus biologically will meet treatment needs for the next 20 years as well as provide operational flexibility to meet potential future nutrient limits.

This project received a 2021 ACEC IN Engineering Excellence Honor Award.

Strand now has a staff of more than 450 employees nationwide, with offices in 10 locations across seven states.
