Deputies arrest Indianapolis driver after traffic stop

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies arrested an Indianapolis man Thursday night after a police K9 alerted on the vehicle after a traffic stop.

Deputies arrested Sonny L. Jones, 40, Indianapolis, on preliminary charges of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and operating a vehicle without ever obtaining a license, according to department records.

Jones was driving on U.S. 31 near County Road 550N just before midnight Thursday when he was stopped for speeding, deputies said. The sheriff’s department K-9 alerted on the vehicle and during a search, deputies found a loaded handgun inside the engine compartment of Jones’ vehicle, deputies said.

Jones was being held in the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $42,500 bond, jail officials said.
