North’s Huffman headed to Hanover

Blake Huffman

Blake Huffman, a two-sport athlete who helped lead Columbus North to Conference Indiana football and baseball titles, has decided to his football career at Hanover.

Huffman led Bull Dogs with 169 carries for 1,141 yards and 17 touchdowns in eight games last fall. He also caught 15 passes for 96 years.

Huffman was a Class 6A Senior All-State selection by the Indiana Football Coaches Association and was The Republic Football co-Player of the Year with Columbus East’s Malachi Parks, who also is headed to play at Hanover.

Bull Dog athletes make All-Conference Indiana

Columbus North won Conference Indiana titles in baseball, softball and girls tennis this spring, and the Bull Dogs are well represented on each of those All-Conference teams.

Seniors Jacob Bailey, Austin Bode, Reese Harmon and Kyler McIntosh and junior Will Baker made the All-Conference baseball team. Senior Hayden McDaniel was an honorable mention selection. Ben McDaniel was named co-Coach of the Year.

Junior Lillian Mackey, sophomores Josie Lemmons and Maddi Rutan and freshman Kelsey Lovelace are on the All-Conference softball squad. Senior Meghan Waggoner and junior Emalee Heafner made honorable mention. Ron McDonald is the Coach of the Year.

Senior Jaline Tay, juniors Tiffany Fu and Ashlie Wilson and freshman Kathryn Wilson were selected to the All-Conference girls tennis team. Kendal Hammel is the Coach of the Year.

Olympians, Panthers selected All-HHC

Columbus East seniors Parker Harrison and Kaden Wise and junior Will Rieckers and Jennings County junior Jacob Vogel have been named to the All-Hoosier Hills Conference baseball team. Jennings junior Carson McNulty is an honorable mention selection.

East sophomore Kenzie Foster and Jennings senior Tori Lee and junior Delaynee McCreary made the All-HHC softball team. East junior Kerigan Greathouse and Jennings senior Avery Zamora are honorable mention selections.

Jennings junior Reagan Brown is on the All-HHC girls tennis team for singles. Panther freshman Tatum Brown made honorable mention for singles, and seniors Liz Ertel and Sydney Carson made honorable mention for doubles.

Wilson named North girls tennis MVP

Junior Ashlie Wilson has been selected MVP of the Columbus North girls tennis team.

Jaline Tay won the Bull Dog Player Award. Tiffany Fu, Tay and Leah George won the Mental Attitude/Sportsmanship Award for Varsity; and Sydney Cooper, George and Arya Gotoh were named Most Improved for Varisty.

For JV, Sanjana Penmathsa, Ananya Adur and Shenyi Gong won the Mental Attitude/Sportsmanship Award; and Siri Poludasu, Ella Gray Partin and Juhi Patel were named Most Improved.

Wilson and Fu were selected team captains for 2022.

Columbus Christian hires new coaches

Columbus Christian has picked two of its alumni to lead its girls basketball and volleyball programs.

Chris Noblitt has been named the Crusaders girls basketball coach. Savannah Spurgeon takes over the volleyball program.

Greiwe to host free-throw clinic

Columbus East incoming senior and three-time Republic Girls Basketball Player of the Year Koryn Greiwe will be putting on a free free-throw clinic for incoming second-through-eighth-grade boys and girls June 23 at East High School.

The clinic will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. for incoming second-through-fourth graders and from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for incoming fifth-through-eighth-graders. T-shirts will be sold for $12 (or two for $20) to raise money for Foundation For Youth’s athletic programs.

North girls holding free Youth Soccer Skills Camp

The Columbus North girls soccer team is holding a free Youth Soccer Skills Camp. The camp continues from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and June 23 and July 7 and 14 at the new BCSC Soccer Complex for girls ages 7 to 13.

Each session will focus on individual skill development through small-sided activities. Players will be coached by current and past North players.
