Letter: Profane flags need to come down

I have observed, with dismay, in the weeks leading up to Memorial Day, several "flags" flying beneath our national flag, using profanity directed toward an elected official. These have been displayed in front yards, in plain view of all who pass by, including children, God-fearing adults, etc.

Is this the new patriotism?

I would ask all who display such language and disrespect toward any leader in our country to read two books: "Flags of our Fathers" and "The Greatest Generation." Then go out and look at what you have displayed, and reflect on whether that is what all of our fallen heroes would have wanted you to do.

They earned and won our freedom to do all kinds of things, but with freedom comes responsibility. Responsibility to be civil, disagree respectfully, practice common decency, protect our children,  and love our neighbors even if we disagree with them.

So, come on, Americans, with Memorial Day in our recent memories, and Independence Day coming up, fly Old Glory proudly — but please drop the profanity, and disrespect.

Let’s stop personal attacks, stick to issues when we disagree, lift each other up out of the dark days behind us and try to create a better future for all.

Our veterans, fallen heroes, and leaders deserve it. You ARE FREE to disagree.
