The awards keep rolling in for Tucker Smith.

Smith, who will be a senior at Columbus North this fall, earned one of the highest honors in his sport Thursday morning when it was announced that he was awarded Gatorade Indiana Boys Track & Field Player of the Year.

By winning the award, Smith is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Track & Field Player of the Year award.

Smith is the second boys track and field athlete in school history to win the award since Christian Wagner did it in back-to-back years in 2003 and 2004.

Smith broke the overall state record in the shot put with a throw of 69 feet, 4 1/2 inches this past spring before winning the state title in the event by throwing 68-7 3/4.

The Gatorade award not only recognizes a person’s athletic excellence, but it also recognizes high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.

Smith was named The Republic’s Boys Track and Field Player of the Year last month.
