INDIANAPOLIS -– Ivy Tech Community College won the 2021 NROC Ambassador Award and the inaugural Council on Accreditation of Two-Year Colleges Innovation Award for the Knowledge Assessment Initiative implemented in 2020. Knowledge Assessment (KA) is part of Ivy Tech’s multiple measures, holistic approach to determining a student’s college readiness.

In spring 2020, in response to the COVID pandemic, Ivy Tech moved rapidly to scale implementation of the NROC Project’s EdReady knowledge assessment across its more than 40 locations. Students are offered the option to take the assessment in a non-proctored, self-paced environment with multiple attempts available. By establishing a more holistic process, it allows non-cognitive factors, such as motivation, to play a part in the placement process.

In addition, campus teams guide students to provide the support that they need to complete the process and enroll in their program of choice. Early results demonstrate the alternative to high-stakes placement exams is strengthening student achievement and efficacy continues to be tracked across demographic groups to better understand and refine the effort.
