City recycling worker commended for helping injured resident

A Columbus Department of Public Works employee was recently honored for helping an injured Columbus resident he encountered while on the job.

Craig Seaborne, who drives one of the department’s recycling trucks, was honored by the Columbus Board of Works. Department director Bryan Burton read a letter commending the Seaborne’s quick action to help a local resident.

According to Burton’s commendation, on July 21 Seaborne was in the middle of running what he thought was his normal Wednesday recycling route when something unusual happened.

“As Craig was entering Heathfield addition, a gentleman came running out of his house, needing help,” Burton said. “The gentleman had cut his arm and was bleeding profusely.”

Seaborne didn’t think twice, jumping out of the truck, called 911, told the man to sit down and ran inside to grab a towel, which he wrapped around the man’s arm to help stop the bleeding. He ran back a second time to get another towel and sat with the resident until help arrived.

The Columbus Fire Department showed up a few minutes later and took over medical care for the individual.

“After all was said and done, Craig got back in his truck and continued to finish his route,” Burton said.

He added that the department was later told that the resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, was taken to Indianapolis and spent a few days in the hospital. Seaborne said he was glad to hear that the man was OK.
