East falls to 4A No. 9 Chatard

Staff Reports

INDIANAPOLIS — Bishop Chatard quarterback Carter St. John threw for more than 350 yards and five touchdowns and was a perfect 20 for 20 passing.

That was all in the first half.

Columbus East was simply outmatched Friday night against the Class 4A No. 9 Trojans, who are the two-time defending 3A state champions, in a 42-0 loss.

Chatard moved up to 4A this year based on the IHSAA’s tournament success factor. It’s the Trojans third win of the season, but they’ve played one of the toughest schedules in the state, playing 3A No. 2 Brebeuf Jesuit, 4A No. 1 Roncalli and 5A No. 1 Cathedral.

The Trojans (3-4) scored on all six of their first half possessions. The first touchdown came on a St. John pass to T.J. Ford to go ahead 7-0 after the point after try was good.

The Olympians (2-5) had its best drive of the game on its opening possession. They ran a balanced attack running and passing. They eventually got inside the red zone, but then quarterback Ethan Duncan was intercepted in the end zone to end the drive.

On Chatard’s next possession, Tommy Hannon caught a 52-yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 14-0. On the Olympians next possession, Duncan was sacked while attempting to pass, and it resulted in a safety to make it 16-0.

East punted on its next three possessions, and the Trojans scored four more touchdowns to ensure a running clock in the second half.

The Olympians will look to bounce back with two Hoosier Hills Conference games remaining. They’ll travel to Jeffersonville on Friday and then finish up regular season play against Bedford North Lawrence on Oct. 15.
