Have you ever felt like you don’t make enough of a difference, or just want to help people in need? Now you might have the chance.

With the United States’ recent withdrawal from Afghanistan, there are thousands of Afghan refugees at nearby Camp Atterbury. These people are needing assistance in the adjustment to a new life and country.

The refugees are needing lots of supplies to support the abundance of Afghan people coming here.

Water, food, and even the most basic essentials are needed.

In order to donate clothing all items must be new. If you would like to donate monetarily, checks can be made out to “JCHS Key Club” with “Refugee Support” in the memo line. Cash and checks will be accepted in the main office at Jennings County High School.

Senior Drew Yeager, the JCHS Key Club President, said: “The JCHS Key Club has been collecting tons of hygiene products and new clothing items for the Afghan refugees at Camp Atterbury.

“We have raised nearly $2,000 in donations, which we will use to buy even more items to donate to the people at Camp Atterbury. We have worked with other clubs throughout the high school, other Key Clubs around southern Indiana, and local Kiwanis clubs to raise awareness and donations day-by-day.

“We are still collecting items, because of our success and the extended stay of the refugees, we are extending the deadline to bring items and money until October 27.”

JCHS teacher and Key Club sponsor Eric Kelly and the Key Club meet every Wednesday after school in the JCHS Library until 4 p.m.

Key Club is a great way to be involved in your community. This club creates many opportunities to be involved in your community, including helping Afghan refugees.
