INDIANAPOLIS — A man was fatally shot about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on the University of Indianapolis campus.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers found the man in the 1200 block of Campus Drive, a parking lot on the north side of campus near a residence hall, with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services took the victim to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital, where he later died, according to an IMPD news release.

University students were alerted of the shooting at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, about eight hours after the shooting occurred. The alert said the victim was not a student or staff member, though students assisted at the scene and called 911.

The shooting comes a week after an armed robbery Oct. 12 near Warren Hall, also on the southside campus.

Dean of Students Kory Vitangeli on Friday sent an email to students ensuring that safety was a top concern of the university’s.

“The safety of our campus has always been the top priority for University Police and leadership,” Vitangeli said in the email. “The University has taken precautions to ensure the safety of our campus community by increasing patrols and officers’ presence on and near campus.”

IMPD officers are investigating the shooting as a homicide. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency has collected potential forensic evidence, and the Marion County Coroner’s Office is working to determine the manner and cause of death, according to the IMPD news release.
