Trinity wins regional

LOOGOOTEE — Class A No. 1 Trinity Lutheran is back in the final four for the second time in three years.

The Cougars (30-4) avenged a loss to host Loogootee in last year’s regional with a 25-17, 26-24, 17-25, 25-19 semifinal win over the Class A No. 5 Lions on Saturday afternoon. Trinity then beat Springs Valley 25-21, 25-11, 25-20 in the evening.

Bailey Tabeling pounded 35 kills, Addison Darlage recorded 88 assists, Ruthie Bingham had two solo and two assist blocks and Kamzi Gross served four aces to lead the Cougars on the day.

Also for Trinity, Bingham tallied 20 kills and Stella Kleffman and Carson Bowling each added 20 kills and two assist blocks. Tabeling had one solo and two assist blocks and two aces, and Laura Roeder served three aces.

Cougars fall to Chargers

GREENSBURG — South Decatur was within 16-13 late in the first quarter Friday, but North Decatur pulled away for a 58-19 win in a first-round Class A sectional game.

Kelby Shook threw for 138 yards and two touchdowns. His scoring passes went for 62 yards to Jacob Scruggs and 65 yards to Dale Peters in the first quarter. Corbin Johnson returned a kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter for the Cougars (2-6).

Rhett Martin led South Decatur defense with 16 tackles. Austin Boilanger had 12 tackles and Owen Arreola added 10 tackles.

“They beat us up front,” South Decatur coach Rick Zimmerman said. “Both sides of the ball, we need to get physically stronger. We’re excited about getting ready for next year, but have a lot of work to do in the weight room in the offseason.”
